The effort to find ways to close the achievement gap—the disparity in academic performance that tends to follow well-established race and class patterns—has become a national priority since the enactment of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2001. Schools are now held accountable for achievement, yet with a myriad of contributing factors, they struggle to identify how to apply limited budgets and resources to solve this complex challenge.
